F250 2003 Super Duty engine does not start but does crank

Asked by Greg Jul 06, 2023 at 03:07 AM about the 2003 Ford F-250 Super Duty XL Extended Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello. I inherited a 2003 F250 4x4 manual trans with only 70K miles on it
Truck was in Montana and shipped it to California. Ran great until recently.
Cold start no problem. Once engine gets hot and I attempt to restart after
turning off engine, engine cranks but never restarts. Had under dash fuse
block replaced ($1,200) and same problem came back. Also, trying to smog
truck. Issue is both Oxygen Sensor and Oxygen Sensor Heater do not
register. Everything else passes. I was told to keep driving it and it should
register. Of course, driving it more means it may not start when I turn engine
off. Any suggestions? Thanks.

When an engine runs fine for a long time, then fails to restart after having been off for a little while, like after gassing up, there's a mechanical/electrical problem that needs to be fixed. it's likely that this is leaking injectors that flood the engine when it's turned off, and excess fuel doesn't dissipate until the engine has cooled. Try starting with the accelerator floored; this Wide Open Throttle (WOT) action clears excess fuel. If this isn't the cause, it could be a defective engine coolant temperature sensor, faulty coils or plug wires, faulty crank or cam position sensors, or faulty EGR valve..... After disconnecting a battery without using a memory saver, you often need a drive time to get the computer to relearn ifs settings. Do this and it's more likely that you'll pass smog here.
