check into a transfer case of a transmission probably...

Sorry, but I'm guessing you did check transmission fluid level? One other test to check transmission is to pull the dipstick and pull it through a clean white cloth. If you notice a substantial amount of black debris your tranny has significant wear and you could have a plugged tranny filter.
