4x4 not working on ford f-250 2001 super duty there is no 4x4 light, what can the problem be?
No light can either mean a blown fuse, possibly a short in the shift motor circuits or a shorted shift motor, it's rare but even bad 4X4 processor.
Thank you for the quick response, I took off the shift motor to see if there was anything obviously wrong with it but nothing looks bad, any way to test this thing before I order a new one?
The best way is too test for proper power feeds to the shift motor during mode switching, if the powers are there and the motor is unresponsive then the motor is bad. But you should still have a light, no light means other power problems.
So like wiring issues or a bad GEM?
Right, check the fuses first, either ohm out each individual fuse or power on each circuit and use a test light. Remember there are two fuse boxes.
all fuses are good. tested for power to the shift motor it has no power, I hate to switch out the 4x4 module and find out that wasn't it.
Then find a good shop manual, if you can't then try your local library in the reference section, if they have a shop manual them you can have the section you need copied. Have you pulled out the switches and tested for power and grounds there? I have heard but never seen that there is a problem with the harness right where it comes through the floor for the shift motor, vibration gets to it and it breaks the wires internally, might be worth a look see.
