i have a 2004 avalanche. my speedometer sometimes dont zero out. what can be wrong

must be the connection of wires. take out the speedometer case and see for loose connections. http://chevroletavalanche.net/pictures/

Sounds like a problem with the stepper motors. Known problem in GM vehicles from 2003-2006. You can fix it. http://usedcarsit.com/content/chevrolet-speedometer-gauge-repair-instrument-cluster
