I have 2005 Toyota Sienna XLE with 140K miles on it. I just bought it. I got mechanic check and he looked at the timing belt by loosening the belt cover. The mechanic told that its timing belt has not been replaced. So I need to get that replaced. I got a quote from other mechanic and he said. Just timing belt would cost around 300 and with water pump it will cost 550. Do I need to change the water pump also? Thanks

I would absolutely change the water pump. Here's why. The water pumps location is exposed when you change the belt. Those water pumps are notorious for going out just over 100,00. The biggest cost to change the belt is labor. If you are willing to gamble that it won't go out or you are getting rid of the car, then you may want to gamble. You may want to find your own water pump and ask the man to replace it when he does the belt. His mark up on the pump is high. Autozone offers a new one for $62. It may make your mechanic mad but money is important. He should not add very much to labor because he willonly need to remove a few bolts to replace the pump.
