Air bag Spiral Cable

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Dash Light went on of seated guy w round thing in front of him.  Figured it
had something to do with the airbags.  I do keep heavy things on the
passenger front seat and therefore lock in the seat belt so the sensor won't
beep.
garage said trouble code B1811 open in "D" squib (dual stage 2nd step)
circuit.  Further diagnosis, found faulty spiral cable. (same guy said
serpentine belt needed replacing, but it looks and feels brand new).
So, how dire is it to get a new $334.70 cable and remove and replace for
$157.50? Will airbag self-release at any time? Will it not release during an
accident? Are these reasonable prices?

before you replace see if its disconnected,

Following. I took my corolla in for an airbag recall. The dealership said that it would be $735 for parts/labor to replace the spiral cable!

Make sure you buy an OEM spiral cable or actual Toyota part. You can find out how to do the job this on Youtube (the video may not be for a Prius but I watched a couple Toyota- related videos and it was the same procedure). Make sure you disconnect the negative on your battery before you start as you will be removing an air bag. Many cables say they are "OEM quality" or something similar. I tried one of those and replaced it two days later as it wouldn't turn the airbag system back on. Many have posted similar experiences. I can do this job in about 30 minutes. It's quite easy.
