91 toyota corolla wagon. Weird model. No crank position sensor

Asked by Jan Aug 21, 2020 at 03:37 PM about the 1991 Toyota Corolla DX Wagon AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 91 toyota corolla will not start. It is an in-
between year model. And has NO crank position
sensor. It acts like it wants to start but it just wont.
The spark plugs have been checked  along with
alternator both are working fine. Ill be the first to
say i know very little about repairing cars but have
to do this on my own.  I have taken photos of every
inch under the hood to see if i could see a problem
, but have no clue what to look for.
If its not the crank position sensor nor the plugs
nor alternator what else could it be ? And also how
do i check the ignition switch? Thank yoi

I have a 91 Geo Prizm (a rebadged corolla) that has the same problem. It turns and pumps fuel but there is no spark from the distributor (which I just replaced). I have been through all kinds of different troubleshooting suggestions but nothing works. I was advised that it was the crankshaft position sensor but I was told by some that it didnt have one. However, I have seen something in the general vicinity that looks like one under the alternator bracket. I sure cant find a replacemenr for it though except for 151 bucks from a dealer.

Try this...turn ignition switch to on. Put foot on brake and change gear from park to neutral. If car starts then it is your neutral safety switch that needs attention... either to realign it and tighten back into position or else replace it.
