Question type: Maintenance & Repair

This morning I drove my car to work. At noon, I turned the key, but the engine won't crank. The radio, air vent, etc. works though. The battery is about 6 month old. The car has been well maintained. What should I do? Appreciate any advice. Michael.

Hey Mike, if your not getting a crank when yoy turn the key. The culprit may be a bad starter. If your in a position to do so, turn everything off that could interfere with this sound test. Turn the key as you normally would and listen to what sound the car makes. If you hear a single click, then your starter has failed and needs to be replaced. If not you'll need you have someone check the vehicle out who can do a thorough diagnosis you resolve the issue.

Any warning lights on or flashing when the engine was running? Have you attempted a properly performed jump start? Careful now, this JS must be done correctly. Big $$$$ repairs could result if a JS is done incorrectly. Also...try tapping on the starter motor with a small hammer while some else attempts a restart. Is this vehicle an auto or standard transmission?

There was no any sign of problems or warning at all when the engine was running, before this happened today. This is the first time that it won't start. No, I did not try jump start. The vehicle is a automatic transmission.

Ok....without special equipment to perfprm a diagnosis about all you can do is a jump start and or a tap...tap...on the SM with a small hammer. Does this vehicle have a security system installed? Try moving the gear shift lever in and out of Park and Neutral when starting.

Since it was broken right before I took on a trip, I had to leave it in parking lot for 10 days. Miracly, I was able to start my car as usual. I have not done anything to the car while it has been sitting the parking lot for 10 days. Now, the question are: what prevented the car from starting on March 9? Will this problem reoccur in the future? What should I do now? Many many thanks.

My guess is this issue will return. You might consider driving the vehicle to a Auto Parts Store that will perform a scan of the computers on this vehicle....for free. Write down any CODES they may find with the ID numbers involved......or.....take the vehicle to your repair shop for a check up. Good Luck.

I agree with with last chance garage. Take it to a shop. I do know from experience however that when a starter begins to fail, with these cars specifically (dating all the way back to the aeg motor) the symptoms were the same. Have the charging system analyzed. I'm pretty sure you'll find the culprit hiding there. Also, check the starter connections and see if they are loose or corroded. A bad electrical connection can give the issues as a failing component in the charging system.

Well, it won't start again. Will have to tow it to a shop, unfortunately.

This could also have been caused by your fob. If anyone is having this issue try removing the fob from the key ring and putting in the passenger or back seat while starting the car
