Cana speed snsr malfunction cause trans. issues (rough shifting, slippage?)

After replacing plug wires, my speedometer quit working.  The code provided is a "Speed Sensor Malfunction".  Along with this issue, the car began to shift roughly and seemed to slip out of gear twice.

Yes, the speed sensor can cause this problem. The transmission control module and solenoids rely on information about vehicle speed from the output speed sensor. It's not a particularly expensive or difficult fix on most vehicles. We did one on a Dodge Stratus at the dealership that cost the owner about $150 total and took @ 1 hour to fix.
