My 96 Camry Auto will not start

Asked by Spottifish Oct 10, 2016 at 02:48 AM about the 1996 Toyota Camry LE Wagon

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Can turn the ignition on and all accessories light up but when I turn to start it doesn't turn over. Battery and every thing is fine. It seems like the starter is not getting the signal possibly thru the park/ neutral switch. How can I check this please?

Is there a security system installed on this vehicle? Factory...or...aftermarket? What Engine ....What Transmission?

I believe the PN Sw. is located on the Tranny. Not easy to get to and test unless you know how to use a Digital/Volt/Ohm Meter....and..have a wiring diagram to ID the correct wires for said Sw. I would Start the diagnosis at the Battery....looking for corrosion around the terminals and Using that DVOM to do some testing. A fully charged battery should have between 12.3-12.6 DC Volts at the Battery Terminals with no electrical loads applied.

A quick way for a starter test is to do this: Locate starter, have a buddy hold the key to the ON position like he's starting the car, as he holds the key, rap on the starter with a hammer. If the car suddenly turns over, your starter is bad. If nothing happens after a few good raps, I would check your Neutral safety switch. Have you tried starting the car in neutral?
