Problem with 1993 Toyota Camry

I was driving my 1993 Toyota Camry home from
work when I noticed a sweet smell coming out from
under the hood. It smelled sweeter than antifreeze,
but there wasn’t any smoke pouring out.  I made it
home and started the car back up to leave for work
the next morning when the smell started coming out
strong from under the hood, and started shaking
violently and sounding like it was going to stall out. I
quickly shut it off, and then when trying to restart it,
it wouldn’t start back up. Nothing was leaking under
the car, and all the fluids look fine.. and like I said
there wasn’t any smoke, just a horribly sweet smell.
The power steering was going bad, but I assume
the pump burning out wouldn’t cause all that, would
it?? Car is supposed to be given to someone else
and I’m trying to fix it so he can get it. Please help!

The guy was getting it for free since it’s his first car and I’m trying to fix the problem for him before he gets it from me. I’ve heard that coolant is usually the cause of a sweet smell and it seemed to be full but like you said it could be evaporating. I’m just trying to see if someone has any ideas what it may be so I know If I’m looking at a cheaper fix or if fixing it isn’t worth it.
