hot air coming out of defroster side vent with nothing on.

Asked by twilam Jul 04, 2016 at 12:32 PM about the 1999 Toyota 4Runner 4 Dr SR5 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The driver's defrost vent discharge is warm to hot with all temp/heater/AC
/fan controls off. Most noticeable when starting to drive somewhere. Also,
the radiator is very hot with minimal distance traveled (less that 1/4 mile).
The water pump, thermostat and timing belt was recently replaced. The
vehicle has 180,000 + miles on it.. The issue did not exist before repair work
was accomplished. Any ideas?

Make sure their is no air trapped in the system impeding coolant flow. Google how to bleed air out of cooling system. You can also pick up a test kit most auto parts shops that will test for hydrocarbons in the coolant, which is an indicator for head gasket issues. (Napa has a product called "block tester" for that).
