Great difficulty, maybe, but not impossible. I had to change the water pump and the guy I was working with move the 2 driver side gears for the chain. So my timing is off and I would just die to figure out how to reset said timing

I had to have my cam shafts seals replaced so they did the timing belt too , they also changed all the pulleys and the water pump , the main thing is trying to get the timing correct BEFORE you put eveything back together it cost me about $600.00 for the whole shabang I had the money or otherwise I would have done it myself

If your timing is off, you can bend valves and make the fix much more expensive. When you do a water pump, it's time to do the belt and all the pulleys too so you don't have to touch it again. That said, is it a belt, or a chain? I was pretty sure it was a belt, but I could be wrong.

Was yours an H6? The EZ30D in the Outback actually has two timing chains.

How do you know you need your timing chain replaced? Maybe you just need a timing adjustment. I thought timing chains on the H6 were supposed to last the life of the car. Well, if that is not the case, this would be a pretty good argument to buy the H4 with the timing belt which is probably a whole lot easier to replace. Did someone determine that the chain stretched out or has metal fatigue and is about to break?
