2001 Subaru Legacy GT STI Motor Swap

Hello everyone I've got a 2001 Subaru Legacy GT 4
door manual transmission and one of the rods is
knocking so I am wanting to replace the motor and
I'm wanting to put in an STI motor is there a certain
year or certain motor that I can put in it I'm wanting
to build this motor for racing as well as an
everyday driver can anyone help me as far as what
motor to look for or what will fit looking to be
somewhat cost conscious thank you everyone in
advance for your input.

Does the knocking go away when warm? If it's present when warm and applying throttle you WILL have to replace it soon anyway. STi 2.0 swap? Lots of stuff, inc exhaust, ECM, etc. Get advice from an STi/WRX/GT pro.

@ernest yeah I know I'm going to have to replace it. That's why I'm trying to find out a good or the correct STI motor to put in it and I understand that I will have to put a lot of other things into it like exhaust, ECM and a bunch more fun jazz. Luckily my friend works at a salvage yard and I've built motors since I was young although they were all small block V8 builds. I was just wondering if there was a certain year of STI I should look for a motor out of that would crossover better than others.
