overheating

Asked by Bambi Jan 09, 2010 at 12:04 AM about the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt LS Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

my 2006 cobalt ls has been at a solid 196 degrees ever since i got it. For the past week I've been
noticing that the temperature is rising and falling with a difference of 20 degrees. For example. I'll be
driving(5th gear) and if my car has no heat on, no air conditioning on, it will teeter between 187-
199. When I'm stopped, it will rise steadily( the highest it's gone while driving is 207) until I start to
take off again. Then it will fall back down and teeter. When the heat is on, the temperature rises.
When the air conditioner is on, is will maintain between 199-205 I have had the thermostat replaced
already and the fan works( yesterday when the mechanic was looking at it he revved the engine
and it got up to 227 before the fan cut on. But today when I tried to rev the engine to see if the
temp would rise, but it didn't. it fell. What is this?

I'm having the exact same problem with my 2006 colbalt, the thermostat was replaced and that made it even worse, on the highway going about 3 exits my car reached 263 degrees today and the light came on and I had to pull over and let it cool down for a few minutes and drive through the towns so it didn't overheat on the hgihway. My dealer said it might be a head gasket but I don't see any antifreeze in the oil. I hope my engine doesn't seeze on me.

2009 Cobalt over heating, when you put the air on it stops over-heating.

My wife has a 09 cobalt she said it started shifting funny and she smelled a overheat smell. I noticed the reservoir expansion. I put a thermostat in it today drove it around to make shore it opened up. When I got home I took off the reservoir cap and it shot off and started spraying. My question is what else could make the car overheat?
