06 Chevy Cobalt LS 2.2

I just replaced my alternator a couple
hours ago. I hooked everything up on
it just like the one I took off was and
it's working like I've even unhooked  
my positive cabled to see if it was
doing its job and it was my car never
died so I hooked my cable back up
but now I can start my car but when I
shut it off the key locks in and won't
come out I have to hit the little
button in the steering column every
time I shut it off now why is it doing
that instead of just coming out
please help it's annoying as crap

First off, never unhook your battery while the car is running. Modern electrical systems don't like that and its possible you fried something. I believe there is a solenoid that releases the key. Trouble shoot that and you'll likely find your problem. I'd start by going through the fuse box to see if a fuse or relay has failed.

Really I had no idea that I could mess something up by doing that I'll be honest I'm a YouTube mechanic so I'm learning as I go but everyone I know has told me that by doing that it's the easiest way to make sure the alternator is working granite they're all order gentlemen that told to unhook the cable so that's good to know thank you but I have checked all my fuses and relays they're all still good that's what made me confused on what could be making it keep locking the key in

Not surprised it’s us older guys giving you that advice. It’s old school stuff that worked back in the 60s and 70s. Modern electrical systems, and I mean 1990s and newer, are super sensitive and easily damaged. You could try scanning for trouble codes but you may need to enlist the help of a shop that specializes in auto electrical repairs to find the problem. It will be money well spent.
