From what I have heard Subaru automatics are on the higher side of costs. Make sure you have a reputable shop do the work. Check their reputation out!

You should probably go to a shop to have it diagnosed so you know what your looking at for repairs.

"...loud pinging sound..." does NOT sound like a tranny! Regardless, used MT's are a dime a dozen, and rebuild failure rate is very high. Start with a motor tuneup to eliminate ignition issues, and run a tank of premium fuel to help remove bad fuel in case that's what's causing the noise...which may be rod knock anyway. Simple, cheap stuff first....
