Timing belt question

Asked by Karen Feb 20, 2019 at 11:35 PM about the 2004 Subaru Forester XS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2004 Forester broke down in an intersection. It has almost 100,000 miles on it. After it was towed to my house, the mechanic told me that the timing belt has been stripped. He also told me that the valve stems will be bent because of the timing belt damage. Is it able to be fixed? Should I bother fixing it or just scrap it? I bought this car new in 2004.

Bent valves can be repaired but it is not cheap. It is worth evaluating before writing it off. Compare the repair costs to the cars value and think about a new car.
