Cadillac converter and possible fuel admissions problem

I have a 2006 Pontiac grand prix and
on my computer screen just kept
saying gas cap. But now my converter
is getting cherry red. White smoke
periodically comes out the exhaust.  
Making now bad noise like it's a really
bad muffler , which is not. It can drive .
What do you think it is ?

Have your local auto parts store scan the computer for trouble codes. Most stores will do it for free. I'm thinking either a misfire or EVAP system problem. Excess fuel being dumped into the engine or exhaust system will overheat the CATALYTIC converter. The converter is probably already ruined at this point but don't replace it until you determine what the problem is. You also should not be driving the vehicle. A glowing catalytic converter is a serious fire hazard!! Hope that helps! Jim
