Should I repair the transmission or get a new car?

Old car that is no longer made needing something that costs over half its value. Dump it. When getting a different car look at Honda, Toyota or Mazda, only those three will give you any kind of reliably, everything else will just drain your wallet with repair and parts costs if you can even get parts for them. No electrics or hybrids.

Thanks. I appreciate what you're saying. I think what I'd really like to know is how much longer it would last if I fix the trans. I really like the car, and I only put on about 6000 miles a year. The engine is in good shape, and $3000 is a lot cheaper than buying a new car, even if I have to get a new one eventually.

if the vehicle is in decent shape and you really like it then go ahead. Beats a payment every month for so many years. Just remember eventually the parts supply will run out. I have experienced that on a 2010 model already, some electronic components are no longer available so I’ve had to go with junk parts and that’s a big gamble cause if it doesn’t work that’s too bad cause there is no warranty what so ever and you don’t know how long it may last.

Look at the under carriage and see how rusted it is but I'm thinking it wouldn't be worth it , What GA said

Don't spend that kind of money on an 18 year old vehicle. If the transmission has lost overdrive and TCC (Tourque Converter Clutch) lock up, just keep driving it. Your gas mileage will suffer but it won't hurt anything and shouldn't set a trouble code or trigger the check engine light. It's just like driving in 3 instead of D. Jim

Can't drive it as is. Unfortunately the problem is between 1st and 2nd.

i rebuilt my old 89 riviera x-mission at 165k.. still drives well at 188k. your timing chain should be changed now.
