Transmission won't shift

Asked by Guru16MPQ Sep 26, 2019 at 04:06 PM about the 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Shifter moves through all gears but won't shift out
of neuteral, shift linkage is fine.
When putting it back into park it makes a grinding
noise.
Pulled a set of shift solenoids and pressure plate
from pick n pull, replaced them all. Once put back
together the transmission engaged all gears just
fine for ten minutes then back to square one,
shifter moves but stays in neuteral.

What should I do?

I'm going to assume you've done the obvious and checked the fluid level. After that I'm thinking the transmission is likely finished. I'd take it to a transmission shop for a diagnosis to make sure it isn't something simple like an electronic component, but I would be prepared to start looking for a different car. An '04 GTP is not likely worth repairing.
