Car overheating

My 2001 Pontiac Grand Am has
overheated twice now. When I put coolant
in it a hour later the "low coolant" light
comes on and the gauge on the car goes
pass 200. I don't see any coolant on the
ground so I don't know what the issues
could be.

Probably a bad thermostat. And do not be running the car until fixed as those are aluminum heads and can warp easily when getting hot.
Okay. My friend was telling that it sounded like I had a crack or blown gasket.
Thermostat is easier & cheaper to replace than head gaskets. You can do a compression test on the cylinders to see if any are low indicating a blown head gasket. Also you may have white smoke out the exhaust, or coolant in the oil, or oil in the coolant. All indications of a blown head gasket.

My daughters grand am was doing the same thing but was not losing anti freeze that fast. You can try this with no promises but I added some Aluma Seal cooling system stop leak and it took care of problem. If you do decide to try remove upper radiator hose and pour stop leak directly into hoes then reinstall.
