My grand am GT wont stay running

Asked by Frankie2u_99 Dec 17, 2013 at 08:36 PM about the 1997 Pontiac Grand Am 2 Dr GT Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was having trouble starting my car because of the battery. I bought a new battery and now it only runs for a few seconds then quits. When I attempt to give it gas after it has started it immediately quits. It occasionally backfires thru the air filter and exhaust, this is after I have cranked it over several times. I can hear the fuel pump working. It has been VERY cold where I live and think that possibly there might be ice in the line? Any suggestions?

You probably have a charging problem, not a bad battery. If your alternator isn't putting out the minimum voltage, your engine's computer isn't going to function correctly. I doubt that it's ice in the line - if you're getting a backfire, then you're getting gas to the injectors. Have the alternator and charging circuit tested.
