High idle

Asked by May 27, 2017 at 02:54 PM about the 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera 4 Dr SL Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 91 cutlass ciera has a problem with a high idle.
Once you've reached a stop and release the brakes,
without accelerating or hitting the gas pedal the
car will reach a 30mph on its own.

Sounds like a vacuum leak or bad IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. Is the check engine or service engine soon light on? HTH. -Jim

No service engine light.

Then check for a faulty IAC. A vacuum leak would trigger the service engine soon light. Also, check for a binding throttle cable that's not allowing the throttle to close all the way. HTH. -Jim
