can i use a 16inch or 17inch rim as a spare tire if the car has 18inch rims

I suppose you can as long as you drive it slow and straight to the tire shop. Make sure the tire outside diameter is the same as your other tires.

The only thing to watch for with smaller rims is that they clear the brakes.

No. This is a AWD vehicle all the wheels and tires must match or you will mess up the transfercase and on one of these that can get expensive very quickly.
