2003 Lexus RX 300 No acceleration & check engine light on

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2003 Lexus RX 300
I just purchased this car 3 weeks ago and have driven it an average amount. Today while
on city streets it felt as if the acceleration was slacking but I thought maybe I had not
pressed hard enough on the gas pedal. After stopping at a red light, then accelerating on
green, the car barely got moving- maybe up to 15 mph and I noticed the check engine
light was on. It barely picked up as I continued down the street- 20-25 mph- as I
continued for about a mile more and then arrived home with the check engine light still on.
It was sold to me as is by the dealer- though I'll be seeing what they can do for me.
Thoughts on what might be going on?

If the check engine light is on but not flashing it indicates a malfunction but you should be okay to drive it to the dealership to get it checked out. If the check engine light is flashing at you and the car seems to shake while idling and under acceleration, it should be towed to the dealer. I don't want to guess at the cause based on these symptoms because there are several things it could be. Since you bought it so recently, ask the dealer to take care of it but don't expect it to happen. Can't hurt to ask though and even if they won't cover it completely, see if they'll help you out on the cost of the repair. Good Luck
