Jeep Cherokee 2001 sport - died without warning

Asked by authorchase Aug 31, 2015 at 10:58 AM about the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport that I've driven for the last 4 years
without many problems thank goodness. Now a week ago I went to start it up,
and it would not turn over. A friend gave it a jump, and it worked perfectly, it
seemed almost better than it did beforehand. I've had no issues since, until
yesterday, literally 7 days later to the day. I drove to the store, aside from a
very slight hint of a gas smell, it went fine. When I proceeded to leave the
store, the car attempted to start but would not turn over. I tried a few times,
and gave it a little gas, (I didn't want to flood it out), it finally started, though
very rough. The moment I tried to drive, it shut off. I restarted and at that
point as long as I was in motion it drove. Long and short, after several
starts/stops, I made it home. I turned it off and turned it back on and sat
there; after about 5 minutes it shut off. This morning the car is totally dead, no
lights, radio, nothing. What could possibly be going on?

Have battery and alternator tested. Try removing battery terminals and clean. Is the battery light on ?

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly....No, at this point the car is completely dead...nothing comes on and it doesn't even make a sound when attempting to start it...

Also, by the way, the battery gauge was at 13 all the way up until the moment of failure...and the motor oil and water/coolant levels were good...

Try getting a jump if does not start right away leave cables on for a minute or so before trying to start this will allow the vehicle that is jumping your vehicle to charge your battery. Vehicle that is jumping your vehicle should be idling. Once started see if battery light is on even if not have have battery and alternator tested.

I have similar problem. 2004 JGC, went to start, tailgate had been left open, drained battery. I charged it up, tried to start & almost whole instrument panel lit up. It started RIGHT UP, and shuts down w/in seconds. the malfunction indicator light is on, & it said check gauges. Just tried again, started right up, shutdown. This time the T

cont.) Trans Over Temp light is on, along w/ malfunction indicator light. I have tried reseting computer by inserting key in driver door, turn right, turn left. No go Any suggestions?
