Under which cylinder head is cylinder number ONE?
Head gaskets marked R and L which of these are for the head that is over number ONE cylinder?

Standing at the front of the car, #1 is back at the fire wall on the left end of the engine. If the gaskets are marked with any kind of identifier marks, that side faces up when you install them and it shouldn't really matter which is left or right, as ling as you have the right side up and all the holes in the gasket and cylinder head line up.
