There is so much going on, and so much needs to be checked. Is this mechanic a friend of a friend, or is this gent from a reputable shop? There are a set of logical steps that I would take. Such as, checking if all that he took apart is back together correctly. He may have left off a few things, like wire connections, or incorrectly reconnected the spark plug wires to the wrong spark plugs. Next I would scan the engine with a scan tool for error codes. Have you done that? You can borrow one at AutoZone....just leave a deposit to return it. I would also take it to a AAA (find a mechanic under AAA.com) certified mechanic, and tear into that past repair. He will be able to tell you all the things that are wrong on it, and be honest about the repair cost. Just my suggestion

Your car has an interference engine meaning that when the timing belt breaks, normally valves get bent due to contact with the pistons. May need valve job.
