GMC 1994 truck ignition column?

I have a 1994 GMC Sierra SLE
pick up truck. Ithe truck was
having difficulties turning the key
to start.
It wouldnt pass that last click to
make it start. I'd try a few times
and it would start. Today , when I
went to park truck, I couldnt turn
key to get the truck off or key out
of ignition. I noticed on the way
home some of my gages were not
working. The speedometer, air,
and radio not working. But the
only light that was on  in console
was the emergency break light (
which was not on). Had to
disconnect battery  to stop truck
and still  did not stop running.
Finally ended up turning key to
start truck while truck was
already running and that killed the
engine. What do you thi k the
problem is??

gasoline engine can't run w/o spark, unless it is dieseling? If key won't kill it, I check for primary voltage to ignition coil, shouldn't be any voltage with key off. In the old days, before computer vehicles, I used to burn drip, they called it, my vehicle would diesel like crazy when you tried to kill it. I'd put in drive, that put enough load on the engine to kill it. Then I put it back in park. Fuel octane can effect dieseling--high compression--hot spot in cylinder? If key cylinder giving you a problem, maybe you need a new one? Also check shift interlock.
