Where do I start and what can I do?

Asked by DONMOSK Dec 20, 2020 at 12:32 AM about the 1990 Dodge RAM 150 4WD

Question type: Car Customization

I have a 1990 Dodge W-150, overall it is currently in bad
shape. I have done minor repairs to keep it running, but I
can feel and hear things slowly but surely coming apart,
that being said, I am wanting to completely replace a lot of
it's parts. Bigger engine, maybe try to make it a straight
drive and other things. I have a little experience under the
hood, and have no problem welding or cutting out pieces. It
is just kind of overwhelming to see all that I would have to
do, Im not sure where to start or what all to do, any advice
would be greatly appreciated.

Making the vehicle mechanically sound and safe should be your first priority. If this is your daily driver and only vehicle I would say stop and buy another vehicle for a daily driver. Having a project vehicle that you need to depend on to get to work or school never works. You're always pressed for time because you have to get the vehicle running by tomorrow to get to where you need to be. When working on a vehicle being pressed for time is never good! Nothing ever goes smoothly, especially when working on a 30 year old vehicle. You need to be able to stop where you are and be able to jump in another vehicle to get you where you need to go. Then resume your project the next day, weekend, etc. I have a project car too. A 2000 Grand Prix. But I also have a daily driver. So if I'm in the middle of something on the Grand Prix and I run out of daylight it's not a big deal. I just leave it until another day. I've had project cars in the past that were my daily driver and from my experience, it just doesn't work. Hope that helps! Jim
