what should you do if someone asks to take your car to a mechanic

Depends the reason why they told you to. Is it ur car or a car ur buying?

Go along with them or take it there yourself and meet them there.

That's the easy/hard way to go. But probly be dumb to just let them drive off with it. Thanks.

At the minimum take a photo of their drivers license and them and keep the keys to the other car they are driving.

I would meet them at the mechanic's shop. The three of you (you, the buyer, and the mechanic) can discuss what is to be done and who is paying for it. You can wait right there while the car is being looked over. I would not let a buyer drive off with my car for some undetermined amount of time under any circumstances.

Now 2 others are wanting the same thing!? I just don't have the wherewithall to do it with them most of the time. One had a garage we went to and they said we'd have to come back in 2 hours but I bailed.
