When I turn off the key, everything shuts off, except the engine keeps running

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I parked my car, turned off the ignition and pulled out the ignition key. All of the dash indicators turned off and the tach read zero, as usual. But the engine kept running. I pulled the positive battery cable and then the negative battery cable. Engine still kept running. Finally I  pulled out the PCM relay and the engine stopped. Any ideas?

Thank you, Tom! I suspect that the cylinder doen't come with the switch, right? If the switch is bad, should I replace the cylinder (if it comes separately)? And which part causes new keys?

If your altinator is faulty pulling the battery cable will shut it down because you are not getting the voltage to run the ignition system sounds to like you have a feed back from some place. You can buy the whole ignition system as on unit or just buy the tumbler system I would buy as a complete unit . check the alternator and make sure you are pushing the right voltage and amps required. But tom is right all so. Check all connections to battery and grounds if dirty that could be where your feed back is comeing from. You will get a key with it but if it is chipped there will be alot more to it the emc will need to be reprogramed to that key

Ronc258, you are correct! The shop mechanic replaced the PCM relay and everything works fine now! Thank you so much!

This is so weird....this happened to me too! My car's engine still kept running even after I pulled out the keys. I am hoping it's the PCM as yours was. How much did that cost you?

alot of newer vehicles hAve an automatic crank program on them.once u start the crank cycle the vehicle it will continue to crank for about 15 seconds ..ive seen the same issue before and the problem on that vehicle was fuel pressure regulator was allowing fuel leak to drain bk into tank causing longer start cycle than normal..
