I want to buy a used suv or wagon with AWD because I'm moving to a city that gets LOTS of snow. I have a 2005 Ford Taurus that I want to trade in. Any suggestions for a reliable make/model that I can get for less than 8k-10k (pre-trade price)?

At most, from the calculation tools, I am hoping to get $4000 for the Taurus.  I am leaning
toward either Mazda or Nissan SUVs because of their reliability and price point that is
closer to my budget.

I'd also look into a Toyota Matrix awd and perhaps a Subaru. They would get better mileage and reliability. You could probably even get a Subaru for the same money you can sell your Taurus for on Craigslist and this forum and be good to go; no dealers, no trade in.

Yes, you can get around model year 2000 ish Honda CRV or Toyotra Rav 4 w/ high miles under $10K....However, I strongly suggest you get a 2002 ish model year Nissan XTerra....definitely get this and not another station wagon...XTerra's would be perfect for all that snow driving you'll be doing....it may have 100,000 miles which would freak me out but considering your amount you want to pay, make sure you pay the $100 or so to have an actual mechanic check it out and tell you timing belt looks AOK and no prior frame damage, etc...... XTerra !!!!!
