How do you know if it is a piston My 2002 Ford Focus starts but has a very loud noise afraid to drive it

My focus was in pretty good shape...then when into store..came out ..it started but had a very loud noise...was afraid to drive it...how do you know if it a piston

Well since we can't hear what you're hearing over the internet, I would have it towed to a REPUTABLE mechanic. Have him/her listen to it and go from there.

Is it smoking? Rattling? Shaking? It's unlikely a piston, more likely it's a timing issue.

more thanlikely valve guides came loose and hit top of piston.also probably missing and no compression onnumber two cylinder. will more than likely have to replace two pistons good luck
