2002 Ford explorer Transmission

Asked by Ridger1970 Dec 06, 2012 at 04:13 PM about the 2002 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2002 Ford Explorer Eddie Baurer with 4.6 V-8, Transmission went out and will need to get a new one. I found a transmission out of a v-6 same year with virturally no miles on it. Are they interchangable??

They should line up fine, however the new tranny may not hold the power of that motor and you will be back where you are now, plus you might have to replace the rear drive line. I would go OEM that is always the safe bet. Thanks, Shannon

This post is for informational purposes only. My boyhood buddy who has worked in his dads tranny shop since 1970 and tood it over when his dad past on stated the following about tranny's. In over 40 years he has never seen a passenger car tranny torn up to the point where a new one is needed. Unless the car was used at our local drag strip where kids could build their own dragster and destroy the innnards of the tranny. But the strip closed around 1974, so he has not seen one in years. Also, there is no such thing as a new transmission. If you purchase a rebuilt transmission, keep in mind rebuilding means repaired up to the point of it's failure. He has never seen the gears of a tranny torn up on any transmission used for normal driving. Most repairs involve a torque converter, maybe the bands, and in newer trannys, electronic parts which control and shift the tranny. He added 90 percent of tranny problems would never occur if the owner took it to a shop and changed the tranny oil and filter every 40K, but not many do because the owners manuel states it's good for 90K. He's been servicing my 96 Explorer every 40K since I purchased it new. He's still changing the oil and filter every 40K on the tranny it came with some 260K miles ago.
