I have a 2001 Ford Explorer xlt engine and transmission. Can I put it in a 2000 mercury mountaineer that has a 5.0?

Does the 2001 have a 5.0? If so yes, just determine if there any additional pinouts for the in the 2000 mercury PCM that is not present in the 2001. If there are, take along the PCM from 2001.
