My l993 ford tauras is due for 'smog inspection'. My 'engine' light is flashing on, then goes off. What to do?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When hits a certain RPM ( approx. 45 mph) the 'check engine' light comes on.  If I go slower or faster it goes off again.  Then it can light at faster mph also.  It's driving me crazy!  Unfortuneatly, my car is due for 'smog inspection', two days ago.  I've read my 'HAYNES tECHBOOK', also my chilton book, yet I'm still not clear on how to retrieve and clear the codes. Is there anyone who knows what to do????

i have to disagree, the easiest way is to allow pep boys, advanced auto, napa, chain parts stores to scan it for free, and they tell you what the codes are, (if the light is off there is no guarantee the code is in the memory bank of the computer) and won't help you. Yes it is obd1 (the difference being in the technology of the computer), the 1 connector should be under the hood, passenger side toward the firewall (if i remember right), also will have 2 connector places one labeled EEC Test if the cover is on it. I recommend a semi-pro for reading the codes because of how general the machine is, and complicated it may be to work...let us know what you come up with,
