Backfire out of the intake or out of the exhaust? Miles on the vehicle? Is the check engine light on? Could it have blown a spark plug out?

I don't know if it is intake or outtake exhaust. It has 247000 thousand miles on it and I don't think it is the spark plug but that isn't saying much. I don't have any cash n my boyfriend keeps messing up my vehicles n I left him yesterday and am disabled so any help is much appreciated.
