Volume Control on Radio

Volume control on my 2002 Ford Escape went from okay to full blast and won't turn down.  I noticed in the last couple of weeks it was acting funny, but this morning it won't adjust at all.  Help.

I have a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer that has the same problem. I found if I use the volumn control on the steering wheel it will go down and than it is fine until I turn the car off. Than the whole process starts over every time.
