Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car is riding stiff and squeaks on dips.
Do I need to change both shock absorbers
and springs

if the car has struts then the shocks and springs are a single unit. however, the shock portion can be changed without changing the spring portion. If there is a broken spring or the car "sags" or sits lower then you may want to change the entire strut. I would get a price both ways.

Get a helper and two if you go to the rear of the car and push down with all your weight. The car will go down, then when you release it it should come back up and stay there... maybe a very slight bounce. If it keeps bouncing, the shocks are bad
