black mess in 2006 cemerygas cap compartment

There is a black coating inside the compartment where the gas cap is.If I wait too long to clean it up it will get on the outside.Is the gas cap that's the problem or something worse?

Hi mate, I had the same problem with my Camry, it's actually brake dust getting trapped in there, if you replace the rear pads with fairly descent ones like Bendix Ceramics it should fix the problem, it fixed mine. Hope this helps.
