Automatic car roll backwards on incline left in drive and engine is off?

Question type: General

I would think/hope a car in drive without a foot on the brake and engine is then
turned off would default to park as a safety precaution, but found out the hard
way this isn’t the case.  Why not?

Yes, one would hope so, but unfortunately accidents do happen. I would think that there could be some way to default to park if the ignition is shut off while in drive, but not being a car builder just thought I’d check if some models differ. Car in Drive-Engine Off=Park mode. Wishful thinking.
