Serpentine belt snapped

While driving at 60mph, my serpentine belt suddenly snapped.  I pulled over immediately and shut off the engine.  Looked under the hood, saw a bit of steam, and it smelled of burning...probably the belt.  Obviously I need a new belt, but what other issues might I expect after the mechanic looks at the car?  By the way, I also recently (in the last week) had my A/C compressor replaced, so I wonder if the belt not properly adjusted afterward could cause this.
