1947 Plymouth original gas gauge with a modern sending unit, It don't work

I have a 1947 plymouth with a 350chevy motor and it's a 12 volt system. the car has it's original gauge cluster including the original gas gauge. It also has a fuel cell I/o of a gas tank. I'm not sure what sending unit is in the tank but it's more modern than 1947. i can't get the gas gauge to register. Does anyone know of a solution for this besides buying new gauges?

Have you checked for corrosion, etc. at the terminals to the sending unit? Are you sure the sending unit itself is functional, or has it given up? :) You may need to install a new gauge although I know that you wanted to avoid that -- perhaps you could leave the original gauge intact and mount the new one somewhere out of the way.
