Belt issue

I was currently driving home from work last night,
and tens minutes within driving on the highway my
chargering system failure light came on, and all
sudden I was loosing power, and I noticed once I
pull over i notices my car was trying to overheat I
have a 2004 grand Prix . Once the tow truck driver
finally made it he noticed my belt was hanging
from my car. my question is can a broken belt
cause a car to over heat?

one of the pulleys probably seized up , the belt broke and the alt. and water pump stopped working causing the problems
