2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

My jeep has had a but of a knocking sound for awhile. It
has over 230,000 miles on it. On the day it quit the knocking
was really loud. And I come to s stop sign. Went to make a
right turn, it knock hard and loud and lost all power and
hasn't turned over or started since. My husband originally
thought it was a timing belt issue but since pulled the cover
off and said that was intact. Just would like some ideas
and opinions. Thank you.
