Ecu swap outs

I have a 2000 Jetta 1.8t that a vw garage
diagnosed as needing a computer. I have a
friend that recently junked a 2003 vw
Passat 1.8t. He let me take the ecu out for
my car. The Jetta is a stick shift and low
miles. The Passat was tiptronic automatic
with optional manual shift but high miles.
Will ecu be compatible with the Jetta? If so
can I just swap it out or will it make the
odometer in the Jetta suddenly have high
miles. I think I’ve heard someone say they
need to be flashed? What is that? Thank
