2006 dodge ram 1500 mega cab

All of the sudden the heat went cold I turned it off
and the temp gauge went up turned the heat back
on and had hot air which brough the temp back
down below normal. I should have checked the
bottom hose but I didn't but did touch the cap and
it was cold. I assume no flow like the thermostat
didn't open?
