have a 1985 300zx non-turbo--20,000 miles sat for 4 years--though I could get to the fuel from taking the fuel pump out--seems I lost pressure and now my gas gauge does not work

After 4 years...yes that gas is bad. I would clean out (blow out) all the fuel lines away from engine and probably put a new fuel pump and assembly in it.

Clean out tank also. Change oil, brake fluid etc...
